CHIEF & COUNCIL

Our Chief and Council are elected in accordance with our Revised 2001 Custom Election Code, in a democratic process using a ballot election procedure administered by an appointed Elections Officer.

Elected members of our Chief and Council are elected every 3 years.
Our next election will be held June, 2011.

Chief:

Our elected Chief represents the concerns of all our people... and is supposed to inform us of what is occurring within our tribe and in the community.

2 On-Reserve Council Representatives:

These elected persons are to represent the concerns of our Band members who live on the reserve land of McLeod Lake.

2 Off-Reserve Council Representatives:

These elected persons are to represent the concerns of our Band members who live in the regions outside of McLeod Lake (Prince George, Vancouver, Nanaimo and elsewhere).

1 Elder Council Representative:

The elected Elder represents the concerns of our Elders, who make up one third of our Band membership.

1 Youth Council Representative

The elected person is to represent the concerns of our youth membership, who make up one third of our population.

Prior to the writing of the 2001 Custom Election Code, elected Council members didn't necessarily represent any given demographic of the tribe. Council primarily administered the office and funds that were in each department.

Today, Council is elected to represent not only the people, but it must also administrate over the businesses and entities collectively owned by the people of the McLeod Lake Indian Band.

I was instrumental in writing the Band's 2001 Custom Election Code, which has since been rejected by Chief and Council and is currently being revised again after a vote of non-confidence at our 2007 Annual General Assembly.

The current election code being drawn up is wasting time and Treaty 8 funds paid out to lawyers and meeting groups that have accomplished little to date.

There is nothing wrong with the election code I wrote. It is simple, straight forward and had been approved by all Band members in a proper election process. It was written to be fair, not to be self-serving.
